Part 2: Perspective

In part 2 of Lunarea’s Creating Tiles tutorial, she is going to tell us all about the perspective used in RPG Maker VX Ace’s tilesets, a common perspective used in video games know as the Top Down Perspective.

Included in this tutorial is:

  • Discussion of what top down perspective is and how it is a combination of two real life perspectives used to create the illusion of depth in a 2D game.
  • How to draw some real life shapes in that perspective.
  • What steps that are needed to “rotate” a tile.

Creating Tiles Part 1

by Lunarea

Part 1: Tools

RMVX-Ace tiles are created through a process of digital painting. This process is different from traditional pixel art, both in terms of technique and in tool requirements.

We will go over the tools you will need to create tiles in this tutorial:

  • Art program with transparent background, brushes and ability to save in .png format (examples: Photoshop, GIMP)
  • A hard round brush and a soft round brush
  • A 32×32 pixel grid, created through art program settings or made manually
  • A mouse or a tablet

Take the time to get used to making fluid and uninterrupted lines with the mouse or tablet. Practice drawing curves as well as straight lines (see PDF for examples of shapes).

Part 2 will cover RMVX-Ace’s perspective, object depth and object edges/outlines.

Ace Almost 6 Months Old! Review Drive!

So its approaching six months since the release of RPG Maker VX Ace! Overall the response to our new version of RPG Maker has been phenomenal. Thanks for all the feedback we’ve received, and all the sales.

Ace has been a whopping success, so why don’t we work on getting the word out even more!

Knowing how awesome our fans are, and you guys are awesome, I know you are asking yourselves: How can I help?

Well our first step on getting the word out there is to get more reviews of our product on the major site CNET. I mean, just look at that one lonely review for our product page for VX Ace.

Now, we don’t want just a bunch of 5 star votes, we want honest detailed reviews. Its not just about a number to us, its about visible feedback for potential customers. We want to make sure the people who would want our software really know what its like, and the best way to do that is have you guys talk about it and tell them why they would want it.

Disclaimer: If your honest opinion is a 5 star review, we are definitely perfectly happy with that part, too.

I’ve always thought our product stands on its own, being a unique entry in game development software. Nothing comes close to the simplicity of RPG Maker, especially not with the amount of power and flexibility we provide. But people won’t know that unless you help us get the word out.

If you have the time, and own some of our older products, we’d also appreciate if you took the time to review those on CNET as well:

RPG Maker XP has a lot of reviews, but a lot of them are old and outdated. If we can get some fresh reviews, that would be awesome!

RPG Maker VX, while not having as lonely of a review as VX Ace, could use some reviews as well.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you will share your honest unfiltered opinion of our excellent software on CNET, and other sites as well. Thanks for being great fans.

Resource Staff Release May 2012

Today, I’m here to tell you about some of my really good friends in the RM Community, and share some of their work with you.

In the many years that I’ve been part of the community, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some amazing artists and musicians, and to watch them work together on various projects. On our forums, we have gathered together a collection of these people, and they are working on what we call the Resource Staff.

Every month, the Resource Staff releases a collection of new resources, free to use for any noncommercial project. All you have to do is give credit to the original creator.

So, let’s get looking at this month’s release! Continue reading

Intro to Scripting 3 with Tim

Let’s revisit for a moment a topic that we discussed in our first tutorial, adjusting encounters so that they also happen while riding in the boat (or ship, or airship, for that matter). We saw how it was fairly easy to get this change in place, by only adjusting a few lines of code. But, we might notice there’s a slight problem… unless we craft dozens of different areas to perfectly match the contours of our water and land, we will end up with land dwellers attacking us while on the high seas, and sharks attacking us on land. Needless to say, this is kind of inadequate. Unfortunately, out of the box, there is no way to specify that troops only appear on certain types of tiles. So, we need to write a bit of script in order to make this work.

Before diving into how to do this, it’s worth digressing for just a brief moment to point out that a new feature in VX Ace, known as Regions, averts this issue. Though still impossible to define encounters based on tiles, rectangular areas have been replaced by regions, which can have any arbitrary shape by essentially painting them onto the map. So, the obvious solution would be to simply draw out separate land and water regions as needed, and assign appropriate troops to each. But until the English release, let’s continue looking at VX… Continue reading
